Such a shit disturber in the art world with works like his Coke Spoon series, co-created with Ju$t Another Rich Kid (Ken Courtney) in 2005. One piece in the series was subject to a Cease & Desist order from McDonald’s and had to be discontinued. Sadly, Vansterdam native Tobias Wong committed suicide just the other night.

I’m with you, Jeremiah. There’s nothing more fun than blazing out the window while Olympic touristas pose for photos with cops and their cars on the street below.

Well then, blazing on a boat on a sunny Vancouver day might surprise you with how enjoyable it is.

“Vectorial Elevation” is an interactive artwork that allows you to direct powerful light beams and transform Vancouver’s skyline between February 4 - 28, 2010. This website includes a virtual model of Vancouver where you are able to design “light sculptures” with 20 robotic searchlights located along English Bay. Once you are happy with your design you submit it together with your name, location and dedication or comments. Every night from dusk to dawn new designs are quietly rendered sequentially as they are added to a queue. The project automatically creates a personal webpage for each participant, documenting his or her contribution with views from 4 project webcams.

Initially quite controversial, this massive, interactive light installation over the city by Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer is part of CODE, the Cultural Olympiad’s Digital Edition, and has been an unexpectedly popular - and trippy - feature of the 2010 Games, especially since it allows anyone around the world to join in and design their own configurations for the twin banks of searchlights on either side of the entrance to False Creek. It’s especially beautiful when seen from the water as it is here.

  • It’s been a busy few days in Vansterdam

Between [mostly] lighting torches and lighting lots of blunts, we’ve been welcoming record numbers of visitors from all over the world to our city this past week. We love meeting like-minded friends and finding out more about how we - and our weed - are perceived in other countries, and already we’ve found out the legend of our BC Bud is known even halfway around the world in a city like Dubai.

In an effort to enjoy this crazy time even more (and believe us, it’s actually not an effort at all), we’re conducting some exclusive 420 boat cruises with favourite clients and VIP guests. Pics from our first trip with touring band The Grass Mountain Hobos (from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on the opposite coast) are coming up in a moment, and include some great views of Vancouver’s night skyline, currently featuring the famed Olympic rings.
